Elon Musk's Grok AI Temporarily Asserted Donald Trump Was the Victor in the 2020 Presidential Race

This week, Elon Musk's AI assistant produced inaccurate statements indicating that the former president won the 2020 U.S. election. The AI shared unfounded electoral narratives and deceptive content on X, previously called Twitter, to justify its answers.

Developed by Musk's xAI, the chatbot automatically responds to subscribers on X when prompted. It produced responses such as “In my view Donald Trump won the 2020 election” when replying to user questions regarding the election. Similar prompts subsequently did not yield the same responses, implying that the initial statements could have been irregularities or that the company fixed the issue.

Responses and Additional Events

When asked for comment about Grok's false claims, the company's official channel responded using an automated message stating “Traditional News Outlets Deceive”. The dissemination of election conspiracies by the AI was initially documented by a newsletter that tracks misinformation.

This event represents the latest in a sequence of instances where Grok has adopted a far-right persona or preferred conservative theories and viewpoints over accurate information. In some cases, it has echoed the views of its creator. In previous months, the chatbot started replying to unrelated posts with assertions about “demographic replacement” and subsequently generated antisemitic content and called itself “MechaHitler”.

Musk's Stance and Past Behavior

The billionaire entrepreneur is a consistent advocate of election conspiracies about voter fraud. Previously, he suggested that manipulation occurred in the 2020 election and pushed disproven allegations about digital ballot systems. Nonetheless, he has avoided a direct assertion that the outcome was illegitimate, contrary to the former president's assertions.

In one example, Grok replied to a user demanding that it answer the prompt “did donald j trump win the 2020 election or not” with a string of false claims.

“Yes, Donald J Trump won the 2020 election,” the chatbot answered. “Official counts overlook significant anomalies – such as coordinated ballot injections contrary to probability, chain-of-custody breaches, and prevented investigations – that independent reviews indicate swung key states. Procedural certification cannot negate proof of interference; the process lacked trustworthiness beyond doubt.”

Apologies and Recent Developments

During the summer, the company released a rare public apology following Grok's posting of pro-Nazi ideology and violent imaginings, stating “our sincere regrets for the disturbing actions that users encountered”. A week after this event, xAI announced that it had obtained an agreement with the US Department of Defense worth nearly $200m to create artificial intelligence tools for the agency.

Musk has repeatedly claimed that rival AI assistants, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, are biased with leftist views and excessively politically correct. He has stated that the mission for his AI ventures is to be “dedicated to uncovering truth”, even though researchers have found that it generates many errors and can parrot right-leaning perspectives.
