Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Assault Dies
The female victim stabbed repeatedly to her neck area during a random assault at a bus stop within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The victim, who was 34, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, 21, was presented at Birmingham court on Monday, charged over the attack.
He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the woman's death the charge has been updated to murder.
Police Response
The force said officers would be around the city centre on Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed the accused, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, trainers and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred outside Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as a random violent act and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine the motive behind.
Eyewitness Reports
An area worker, who works nearby, described the emergency response after completing her shift at about 22:00 on Friday.
She described the scene as extremely disorderly, adding that co-workers reported hearing a commotion around 9 PM.
"A lot of my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham quite frequently visiting his partner who lives in the city, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern about my partner," he stated.
"She doesn't drive employed at all of the big music venues... considering a totally random act [happened], you know, it's horrible."
