The hosts secured a 93-run victory
Pakistan halted world champions the Proteas' unbeaten run by sealing a 93-run victory in an exciting and closely contested first Test in the city of Lahore.
The Proteas, who had a 10-match unbeaten run in Test cricket ended with victory over Australia in the World Test Championship final in the month of June, were dismissed for 183 chasing 277.
Having resumed on 51-2, they saw the dismissal of century-maker Tony de Zorzi leg before wicket to left-arm quick Afridi to the third ball of the day to push the tightly balanced chase in Pakistan's favor.
Left-arm spinner Noman Ali, who claimed 10 wickets for 191 runs in the game, dismissed Stubbs for two and clean bowled Dewald Brevis, who put up a fight with a run-a-ball 54.
Right-arm spinner Sajid also took advantage of significant spin to terminate opener Ryan Rickelton's stay - he faced 145 deliveries for 45 - and Afridi returned in the post-lunch session to knock over the tail with a impressive exhibition of reverse swing.
He trapped Kyle Verreynne leg before for 19 and dismissed Prenelan Subrayen and Kagiso Rabada to seal the victory.
It was both sides' opening game of the 2025-2027 Test championship cycle and moves Pakistan directly into the number two spot after leaders Australia.
The win was built around key performances of ninety-three by opening batsman Imam and, crucially, all-rounder Salman Agha which lifted them to 378.
After that spinners Noman Ali and Sajid Khan took advantage of favourable home conditions, as they had in their Test series win over England the previous year, to sustain their lead.
The next and last match begins on 20 October.
