World Health Organization Faces Significant Workforce Reduction Following US Funding Withdrawal
The global health organization disclosed intentions to cut its workforce by nearly a quarter – totaling over 2,000 positions – by the middle of 2026.
Financial Crisis Prompts Major Reorganization
This decision comes after the US, previously the agency's biggest contributor, withdrew funding previously this year.
Washington was contributing about 18% of the agency's total budget, causing a significant budgetary gap.
Projected Workforce Cuts
Based on organizational estimates, the workforce will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one posts in early 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.
This decrease of 2,371 positions includes job cuts, retirements, and natural departures.
"The past year has been among the most difficult in our history, as we have navigated a painful but necessary process of prioritization and restructuring," stated the organization's director-general.
Financial Shortfall Persists
The Switzerland-headquartered organization currently faces a budget gap of 1.06 billion dollars for the upcoming period, representing nearly a quarter of its required budget.
This amount represents an improvement from a previous projected gap of $1.7bn noted in spring.
Excluded Finances
The financial calculations do not include an additional 1.1 billion dollars in potential contributions from current discussions with multiple contributors.
The spokesperson for the organization noted that the present unsecured portion of the biennial budget is actually smaller than in earlier periods, attributing this to several factors:
- Reduced total budget
- Initiation of a fresh fundraising campaign
- An increase in participating countries' required contributions
This restructuring process is currently nearing its completion, allowing the organization to progress with a renewed structure.
